‘90 Second Champion’ is a biographical documentary about the boxing career of the Northern Territory’s Light Middleweight Champion John Siriotis.  In telling his story John provides his perspective on Australian boxing from the 70s and 80s and some of the shame decisions that plagued his career and his attempts at winning Australian titles. More importantly the story is about a single passionate boxer who managed to inspire the local community about the sport. It is also the story of a struggling migrant who found acceptance and tolerance amongst the people of the Northern Territory.

Synopsis / DVD Back Cover text

John Siriotis pursued a professional boxing career from the late 70s to the early 90s, he maintained a consistently high rating in the sport, was respected and held in high regard by many of his peers, including Jeff Fenech, Jeff Harding, Peter Mitrevski, prominent trainers Ernie McQuillan, Johnny Lewis OAM, and the late great Ray Mitchell a former world title judge, television commentator, and boxing historian.

In an extraordinary and very controversial decision, never before seen in the history of the sport John’s attempt at winning the Australian and Australasian Light Middleweight Title, was denied despite being announced as the winner in a ferocious bout with New Zealander Steve Renwick in 1987.

From his humble beginnings growing up in the rough suburb of Erskinville in Sydney New South Wales as a migrant in the late 60’s early 70’s. A brush with the law saw John sent to Darwin in 1975 as Darwin was being rebuilt after the devastation of Cyclone Tracy. John describes his experience, as a boxer and the undertones of corruption prevalent in the sport, the ‘shame’ decisions that come into play as the stakes get higher in the sport and a thought provoking look at how champions are ‘selected’.

Yet despite the setbacks John maintains a positive view of the sport and its role in society and a guiding influence on all young boxers interested in the sport, and has trained several medal winning athletes competing in Australian and State Boxing Titles and in the Arafura Games which is now recognised as a leading international sporting competition for the Asia Pacific region.
